Our island of Gozo is part of the Maltese Archipelago which lies in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The archipelago is home to over 100 dive sites that attract more than 150,000 dive tourists per year. Divers are under the water almost every day, year round. Because of this, dive centres and professionals are in a unique position to carry out conservation, collect data, and contribute meaningful observations towards science – all while shaping people’s experience of the ocean. This role is both a privilege and a responsibility – one which we have committed to by growing conservation projects and research studies all centred around prioritising ocean health. As a result, we have also been able to create opportunities to share values, respect and knowledge of the sea through educational courses and specialised training programmes… Giving back to the ocean that gives us so much
Our Projects
From invasive species research to sea turtle rescues, community clean ups and seagrass conservation, we have built a diverse array of initiatives to tackle threats facing our local environment. Our projects are built in partnership and support of NGO’s, academic groups and local experts to ensure they are delivering genuine contributions to real-world needs.
Marine Conservation Workshop
Gain a new appreciation of the ocean with our unique Marine Conservation Workshops. Discover a perspective that you will carry into every future dive; spot hidden species, read the story of a seagrass meadow from its shoot patterns, and understanding the complex lives of the organisms you meet underwater.
Not only will you learn about the marine environment, but you will also get firsthand experience with some of our research and conservation projects. Visit a turtle nesting beach, replant some seagrass or learn how to conduct a research dive. Cultivate a relationship with nature through these unique experiences.
Marine Research and Conservation Training Programme
This is a training programme designed for those wanting to pursue diving for marine conservation. It offers comprehensive training in underwater data collection techniques, focussing on skills such as underwater photography, survey methods and species identification. It also contains theoretical lessons with a Mediterranean focus. All the topics are centred around our projects, providing experienceboosting opportunities grounded in genuine environmental initiatives.
Meet our Marine Biologist
Emily is our resident Marine Biologist and Open Water Instructor with years of experience in Gozo’s Marine Environment. Over her time on the island she has built strong partnerships with local environmental groups and academic experts; developing research projects, conservation initiatives, and growing a network of likeminded organisations. She joined our team to continue growing these projects and officially launch Ritual Eko.
Emily studied Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth, where she also trained as a commercial and scientific diver. Bringing this together with her local knowledge and experience, she knows what is needed to prepare trainees for future diving careers in Marine Research and Conservation.
